San Lorenzo is Gijón's great city beach: 1.5 km of golden sand right in the centre, framed end to end by the Paseo del Muro promenade. It's the stage for the city's life all year round.
It works with the tide: at low tide it reveals a huge stretch of sand; at high tide it almost disappears. There are surf waves, lifeguards in season and 'La Escalerona' steps as the classic meeting point.
What to see & do here
- Walk the Paseo del Muro from end to end
- Head down to the sand at low tide
- Try a surf lesson
- Meet at La Escalerona, like the locals
Did you know?
- La Escalerona, its most famous staircase and a timeless meeting point, is officially “staircase no. 4”.
- The tide transforms it: there can be over 4 metres between low and high water, exposing or swallowing huge stretches of sand.
- Every August it is the great stage of the Semana Grande festival, with fireworks reflecting on the sand.
