Cimavilla (Cimadevilla) is Gijón's old quarter and, for many, its very soul. The former fishermen's neighbourhood climbs the hill through narrow lanes, low colourful houses and atmospheric squares like Arzobispo Valdés or the main square with the town hall.

It's the heart of cider culture: its traditional taverns (chigres) fill up at lunch and after dark. Walk up to Santa Catalina hill, the crown of the quarter, to end facing the Elogio del Horizonte and the open sea.

What to see & do here

  • Wander the lanes and charming little squares
  • Have a glass of cider in a traditional tavern
  • Climb Santa Catalina hill at sunset
  • See Chillida's Elogio del Horizonte sculpture

Did you know?

  • “Cimadevilla” literally means “top of the town”: it is the highest, oldest part of Gijón, where the city was born.
  • Roman baths from the 1st century still survive beneath its streets: the quarter sits on the Roman Gijón of almost 2,000 years ago.
  • The Santa Catalina hill that crowns it was a closed military site for centuries; today it is an open park with the Eulogy of the Horizon.
