Peor… ¡Imposible! XXVII

📍 Centro de Cultura Antiguo Instituto · View on map

Some films were sold as pure escapism in their day and, decades later, turn out to be a rather sharp portrait of the times that made them. That is the thread of this long-running season from the Centro de Imagen, which every summer brings back to the Antiguo Instituto the popular European cinema of the 1960s and early 1970s: co-productions, unlikely heroes, impossible creatures and plots that smuggled in their social criticism between gunshots and laughter.

Programmed by Jesús Parrado, the season starts from a simple idea: in the Spain of those years, with an industry under censorship and audiences given little choice, genre cinema was one of the few cracks through which a different way of looking at the world could slip in. Watching it today on a big screen, with an audience around you, is a fine way of understanding where we come from.

It runs from 24 to 30 August at the Centro de Cultura Antiguo Instituto, and admission is free until the venue fills up, so we suggest arriving with time to spare.
