Mortadelo y filemón traerán ‘la ciencia’ y sus ‘crónicas disparatadas’ a avilés

Few images are as instantly recognisable in Spain as a Mortadelo y Filemón cover, and this exhibition makes the most of it: it uses 39 covers by Francisco Ibáñez as a way into the real scientific research being done in the country.
The idea is as simple as it is effective. Each cover becomes an excuse to explain what the CSIC is actually working on in that field — from physics to biology by way of technology — and the humour does the rest: you come in laughing at one of Professor Bacterio's impossible inventions and leave with a fairly clear picture of what a laboratory does all day. It is promoted by Avilés City Council and FICYT, with a companion website that expands the contents.
It is on show at the Sala del Cómic in Avilés (MHUA), Calle La Ferrería 35, until 30 September. Admission is free, Tuesday to Friday from 10.30 a.m. to 1.30 p.m. and 4 to 8 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Closed on Mondays.
