Magdalena mariyam (kathakali)
📍 Centro Niemeyer, Avilés · View on map
Centro Niemeyer presents Magdalena Mariyam, one of the earliest attempts to bring a biblical Christian story into the language of Kathakali, the classical dance-theatre of Kerala. Created in the 1960s by T. M. B. Nedungadi and choreographed by master Guru Punnathoor Madhava Panicker, the piece adapts the figure of Mary Magdalene to this Indian tradition's aesthetic codes.
Unlike Kathakali's usual repertoire, drawn from the Mahabharata, the Ramayana and the Puranas, this production showed the art form's ability to tackle religious and cultural themes outside its traditional mythology. It's a good pick for anyone curious about Asian performing arts and cross-cultural encounters. It is performed by the Margi Kathakali company, with Margi Vijayakumar in the lead role.
The performance lasts around 60 minutes and takes place on Saturday 3 October at 8:00 pm in Centro Niemeyer's Sala Club, with tickets from 18 euros.
