The title comes from a 1955 comedy, «¡Aquí hay petróleo!», in which a Castilian village gets its hopes up over an oil field that never materialises. That mixture of anxiety and fantasy is exactly the starting point of this exhibition at the CMAE, which traces how the imagery of fossil fuels was built in Spain and what it has to do with the present.
The display draws on images from public and private archives to tell a rarely visited chapter: the oil prospecting the Franco regime pushed for in its search for energy sovereignty during the autarky years, and how the aesthetics of dams, refineries and energy infrastructure were used to project an idea of modernity and progress. Seen from today, the story connects with the climate conversation in a distinctly uncomfortable way — which is precisely the point.
Part of the Climate Biennial, it can be visited free of charge at the Centro Municipal de Arte y Exposiciones (Calle Llano Ponte, 49) until 25 October: Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10.30 a.m. to 1.30 p.m., and Thursday to Sunday from 6 to 9 p.m.
