Eclipse solar total desde el Mirador de la Providencia

On 12 August Asturias goes dark in the middle of the evening: this is the first total solar eclipse visible from the region since 1905, and it will not happen again here for decades. Within the network of 78 official viewing points set up by the regional government — one per municipality — the one chosen in Gijón is the Providencia viewpoint, on the cliffs of Cabo San Lorenzo, with a clear horizon out to sea.
The Moon starts to bite into the solar disc at 7.30 pm and the maximum arrives at 8.28 pm, when day turns to night for just under two minutes. From then on the shadow slides away until 9.16 pm. The city council has also opened two large viewing areas: one runs from the Piles bridge to La Providencia park, the other from Poniente beach towards El Arbeyal and Campa Torres.
We would head up very early, as that evening overlaps with Semana Grande and big crowds are expected, and we would bring ISO 12312-2 certified eclipse glasses: they can only come off during the seconds of totality. Public transport to the viewing points is reinforced, and later that same night, once it is properly dark, the Perseids arrive.
