Cinerama XXI screens Carla Simón's Summer 1993 at the Escuela de Comercio, with an online talk with the director after the screening. Frida is six when her mother's death forces her to leave Barcelona and move to her aunt and uncle's home in La Garrotxa, where the countryside, a new bedroom and her young cousin Anna — who knows by heart family rules Frida still doesn't understand — await her. Games, jealousy, escapes and silences gradually reveal a grief the girl can't explain and the adults can't resolve for her either. Carla Simón draws on her own childhood to build a precise, luminous film, told at Frida's eye level, which won three Goya awards, including best new director, in 2018.
