The Teodoro Cuesta Auditorium in Mieres screens «Belén», the directorial debut of Argentine actress Dolores Fonzi, as part of the Cinema for Equality series organised by the Equality and Feminism Department. It takes place on Tuesday 29 September at 19:30, with free admission until the auditorium is full.
Set in Tucumán in 2014, the film follows a young woman who is admitted to hospital with severe abdominal pain, unaware that she is pregnant. She wakes up handcuffed to the bed and accused of inducing an abortion; after two years in pre-trial detention, she is sentenced to eight years in prison for aggravated homicide. A lawyer from Tucumán takes up her fight for freedom, backed by thousands of women and organisations, in a case that would go on to change Argentine judicial history.
Written by Laura Paredes, Dolores Fonzi herself, Agustina San Martín and Nicolás Britos, and starring Fonzi alongside Camila Plaate, Laura Paredes and Julieta Cardinali, the film runs for 105 minutes.
