On 12 August 2026, Gijón will experience a total solar eclipse, a phenomenon that has not occurred on the Iberian Peninsula since 1912. The city lies within the eclipse's line of centrality, the strip where the phenomenon lasts longest, making it one of the best places in Spain to watch it. The city council has set up two main viewing areas: from the Piles bridge to La Providencia park, and from Playa de Poniente towards Playa del Arbeyal and Campa Torres. Totality, the only moment when the eclipse can be viewed without certified protective glasses, will last 1 minute and 45 seconds. Since 12 August coincides with Semana Grande, visitors are advised not to travel if they already have good visibility from their own neighbourhood, to avoid crowds and traffic jams.
