On 12 August 2026, Gijón will experience a total solar eclipse, a phenomenon that hasn't occurred on the Iberian Peninsula since 1912. The city lies within the eclipse's line of centrality, the strip where the phenomenon lasts longest, making it one of the best places in Spain to watch it. The City Council has set up two main viewing areas: from the Puente del Piles to the Parque de la Providencia, and from Playa de Poniente towards Playa del Arbeyal and Campa Torres. As the eclipse coincides with Semana Grande, crowds are expected, so it's recommended not to travel if you already have good visibility from your own neighbourhood. Totality, the only moment when it's safe to look without certified eclipse glasses, lasts 1 minute and 45 seconds.
