Verano Joven is the programme Avilés uses to fill the summer holidays with plans for teenagers aged 12 to 16 — some activities open up to 30 — all free and almost always in a group, which is rather the point at that age.
The range runs from the beach to the mountains. On Wednesday afternoons there is pump track at the Villalegre circuit with an instructor, working on pumping and cornering; also on Wednesdays, «sustainable literature» turns Ferrera Park into an open-air writing classroom that ends in a literary picnic. Thursdays mean English through songs and games on the terrace of the Fuero building, no previous level required and no obligation to come every week, while a collective mural takes shape in the courtyard downstairs. Add to that mountain and adventure outings, such as the route through the highland pastures of Somiedo.
Almost everything is drop-in: just turn up. Only the urban camps that include lunch require signing up in advance.
