Costumed parade from Calle Jovellanos to El Carbayedo with the loggers' scene: first day of the Pedro Menéndez recruitment re-enactment.
Avilés brings back one of the most unique episodes in its history: the 16th-century recruitment that Pedro Menéndez de Avilés organised to colonise Florida on behalf of King Philip II. For three days, the streets of the old town fill with parades of costumed performers, Renaissance music and dance. The Asociación Pedro Menéndez stages the Adelantado's encounters with the town's guilds in spots such as Carbayedo square and Plaza Pedro Menéndez. It's a free, open-air event for all ages, through which Avilés honours its famous son and brings 16th-century history closer to locals and visitors alike.
