From 6 to 14 August, Semana Grande turns Gijón into an open-air stage, and every single concert is free — no ticket needed at either venue. Poniente beach hosts the big headline nights, one show a day from 11 pm, while the Plaza Mayor goes for a more eclectic afternoon-and-evening line-up.
At Poniente: Echo & The Bunnymen (Friday 7), Amaia (Saturday 8), Omar Montes (Sunday 9), Revólver (Monday 10), La Casa Azul (Tuesday 11), a DJ set from Amatria and Elyella (Wednesday 12) and Ana Torroja (Thursday 13); the week wraps up on Friday 14 with midnight fireworks and Grupo Assia in the small hours.
The Plaza Mayor opens on Thursday 6 with Me Fritos and Gimme Cheetos, then swings through gospel, Asturian folk, Cuban son and even rock karaoke with María Rodés, The Harlem Gospel Travelers, Buena Vista All Stars, the Gijón Symphonic Band, Sanguijuelas del Guadiana, Marisa Valle Roso and Los Estanques with El Canijo de Jerez. Circle Wednesday 12: the Poniente show starts right after the total solar eclipse Asturias will see that afternoon. Get to the beach early if you're going — those are the nights that pull the biggest crowds.
