On the eve of the festival, a bagpipe-led parade winds through Nueva accompanying a tree some 35 metres tall, planted beside the Santo Cristo del Amparo chapel in an ancient gesture linked to fertility. Bagpipe bands and regional dances, above all the Dance of the Christ, take centre stage for much of the day.
