El Cobayu, in Ribadesella, holds its patron saint festival in honour of San Miguel from 18 to 20 September, with a packed programme of popular events. Friday opens with the doors going up and a cider-tasting 'espicha' for members, followed by an opening speech from kayaker Walter Bouzán and an open-air dance with Grupo Norte and a DJ. Saturday brings children's games and hot chocolate, a bread and wine hand-out for members, and another dance, this time with Kapitana and a DJ. Sunday, the festival's main day, starts with mass at the parish church and a procession to El Cobayu accompanied by the Banda Gaites Ribeseya bagpipe band, followed by traditional dances, the 'subasta del ramu' auction and a countryside meal; the day continues with an afternoon session, a dance contest and closes with a dance led by Grupo Caramelo. We recommend this festival to anyone wanting three days of tradition, music and neighbourhood atmosphere in Ribadesella.
