Thursday 10 September marks the official start of the San Mateo festival in Oviedo, with a day packed with activities across the city centre. The San Mateo market stays open on Avenida de Italia and Campo San Francisco, while food and drink stalls on Paseo del Bombé, Plaza de la Catedral and Plaza Porlier keep the party going into the small hours.
From 18:00, the Fanfarria el Felechu brass band livens up the streets, and at 19:30 the Oviedo City Band leads the traditional parade ahead of the opening speech. At 20:00, Ana Isabel Fernández, president of the Princess of Asturias Foundation, delivers the pregón that officially opens the festival, followed at 21:00 by a free concert by Celtas Cortos on Calle Uría.
The Menú del Indiano gastronomic days also run from 10 to 21 September in restaurants across the city.
