The Compañía Nacional de Teatro Clásico, together with La Zona and Cheek by Jowl, bring 'The Two Gentlemen of Verona' to Teatro Jovellanos, one of Shakespeare's earliest comedies, written shortly before 'Romeo and Juliet', with which it shares many points of dramatic tension. The play explores the tension between friendship and love at a time when friendship was understood as a deeply valued sentimental bond, distinct from and sometimes at odds with romantic love. It also features one of the most iconic creations of the Shakespearean comic servant, a character who would later shape both Elizabethan theatre and the work of Shakespeare's followers. A rare chance to see a top-level classical repertoire production in Gijón.
