Fiesta del santo cristo del amparo en Llanes

The village of Nueva, in Llanes, celebrates the feast of the Santo Cristo del Amparo with a distinctive eastern Asturian rite: the night before, a bagpipe-led parade winds through the village accompanying a tree some 35 metres tall, planted beside the saint's chapel in an ancient gesture linked to fertility.
The main day starts at dawn with hourly masses. At 12:00, a parade sets out to find the music band that will accompany the procession, waiting on the edge of the village. After the main mass comes the procession and, at its close, the Dance of the Christ on the festival meadow, one of the most awaited moments. In the afternoon, a second dance, that of the Married Couples, winds through the neighbourhood.
The day closes with further parades and dances leading into the open-air ball, and that in turn into the traditional garlic soup with which Nueva rounds off a festival declared of Tourist Interest by the Principality.
